If you have any events you would like to post here, please email us the details at info@nsrn.co.uk. October 2010 WORKSHOP Qualitative Approaches to Non-religion NSRN, Venue TBC (London or Cambridge) 'It can reasonably be said that what is most glaringly absent from current studies of those who are not traditionally religious is a qualitative understanding of the ways in which different types of "nones" construct their moral frameworks and meaning systems.' (O'Brian Baker and Smith, 2009, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion: 730) The qualitative study of non-religion poses particular challenges to researchers, yet such work is necessary to advance our understanding of non-religion and secularism. Such work is of empirical value in its own right and will also improve interpretations and methods of quantitative research in this area. Non-religion can be a diffuse and implicit social phenomenon however, and this workshop will consider ways of coping with this and other challenges facing non-religion social science researchers. We particularly welcome participation from researchers who are in the process of developing or undertaking qualitative research of non-religion, but applications from those with a general interest in these issues will also be considered. A formal call for papers will be distributed on or before 7 August; to register your interest before then, please send abstracts or general enquiries to the NSRN at info@nsrn.co.uk. 29-31 October 2010 CONFERENCE Religion in Global Perspective (2010 SSSR Annual Meeting) Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (SSSR), Baltimore, Maryland Amongst various presentations dealing with aspects of the secular and nonreligiosity, the NSRN will be hosting two dedicated panel sessions at the 2010 SSSR annual meeting. The first panel will be called 'Non-religiosity 1: Psychological Science Approaches to Atheism' and will be chaired by NSRN Director, Dr Nicholas Gibson; the second panel will be called 'Non-religiosity 2: Formation and Consequences of Secular Identity' and will be chaired by NSRN founding Director, Lois Lee. Both panels are currently scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 29 October. Further details and registration at http://www.sssrweb.org/ Compiled by Stacey Gutowski and Lois Lee |
